Nitrogen Containers/N2 Containers for Rotors

Industrial steel construction
LM Industrial Steel Construction Nitrogen Container on a Truck
The customer needs a solution from L+M Industriestahlbau for the long-term storage of steam turbine rotors. It is essential to ensure that high-pressure, medium-pressure, and low-pressure rotors are fully and reliably protected against corrosion for several years.

A second requirement is to ensure that the rotors are mounted with minimal stress and perfectly straight using an adjustable center support. This ensures that concentricity is fully maintained even after several years of storage.

The challenge

Due to the large dimensions and heavy weight of the rotors, finding a solution posed a significant technical challenge. In particular, the design of the bearing and support systems required precise coordination with regard to load distribution, deformation behavior, and long-term stability.

In addition, both commercial and technical coordination took place in an international setting. Specialists from China, South Korea, Poland, the United States, and Baden (Switzerland) were involved in the process. This interdisciplinary and cross-location collaboration required a significant amount of coordination.

The solution – unique and clever

Following extensive discussions, technical designs, and consultations with GE’s specialist departments, L+M Industriestahlbau has developed a suitable comprehensive solution: specially designed nitrogen containers with adjustable supports, also known as N2 containers

Typical Applications for Nitrogen Containers / N2 Containers

  • Low-pressure steam turbine
  • High-Pressure Steam Turbine
  • Generator Rotor

The rotors are stored in shipping containers under a nitrogen atmosphere at a slight overpressure, which ensures effective, long-term corrosion protection.

To compensate for minor leaks and pressure fluctuations caused by temperature changes (gas expansion and compression), the containers are equipped with high-pressure nitrogen cylinders as a buffer system. These ensure that nitrogen is automatically replenished as soon as the pressure falls below a defined minimum level.

From the initial proposal through technical clarification to the order and final implementation, the project spanned a period of more than two years. We are proud of the result, and the customer is completely satisfied.
